LA EXCELENCIA GETS VOTED BEST CD OF 2009 by PABLO YGLESIAS !
The band that brought salsa back to its roots. In 2006 La Excelencia released their CD titled: "Salsa con Conciencia". The response to "La Excelencia's" salsa has created a sort of movement. Fans include young salseros who tend to dress with a more urban flavor and the "old-school” salsa aficionados. "Salsa con Conciencia" (salsa with a conscience) is not only a danceable salsa CD, but as the title suggest the songs have been created with a conscience. The lyrics have meaning, and enlighten the community of every day situations found in our own lives or in the lives of others we may know.
José Vázquez-Cofresi & Julián Silva formed "La Excelencia”, a young orchestra with the Salsa Dura (Hardcore Salsa) sound. In 2006 "La Excelencia" began to record their 10 track original CD showcasing vast styles of Salsa Dura and Guaguanco. Edwin Perez sings the single "La Lucha", a song about every day struggles in life and “La Salsa y el Guaguanco” which gives tribute to the African roots of salsa. Julian Silva’s arrangements give each track an urban, aggressive feel, yet not losing the true roots of salsa. Songwriters for the project include Jose Vazquez-Cofresi, Rene Leslie, and Julian Silva.
The music of "La Excelencia" has been compared to the New York Salsa of the ‘70s, which then too informed the community about unity, peace, and the struggles of every day life. Tapping into a younger urban market many have not been able to accomplish with salsa, "La Excelencia" has generated thousands of fans, over 20,000 of which are found on their myspace page; www.myspace.com/laexcelencianyc.
With the immediate success of 'Salsa Con Conciencia', La Excelencia began touring extensively headlining some of the top festivals, venues, salsa congresses, and performance art centers around the world. On tour La Excelencia has sold-out venues at maximum capacity and continues to build momentum by garnering a loyal fan base worldwide. A few of the events La Excelencia has performed at are, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (USA), The Afro-Latino Festival (Belgium), New York Salsa Congress (USA), Oslo Kongressenter (Norway), and Lincoln Center for Performing Arts (USA) to name a few.
Now with much global anticipation La Excelencia will be releasing their sophomore CD during January 2009. A few of the new songs were performed at the New York International Salsa Congress in New York City the songs were well received. As the success of La Excelencia grows so does the orchestras fan base which is quickly making La Excelencia one of the most sought out salsa orchestras in the world.

Johnny and Filo share the same passion: Salsa Mambo ON 2. They got it from stages and trainings attended throughout Europe and the USA. Their style is inspired, from their teachers "The Mambo King EDDIE TORRES", Nelson Flores and Santo Rico. Recently they complete a Certification in Salsa “Puertoriqueña” as instructors by the Universidad Mundial de la Salsa! They promised themselves to bring this style to Luxembourg and make people dance "ON the CLAVE". Since one year, they are training a teenagers group, performing in Luxembourg.
